Lay in the grass and make cloud figures. check!

Today was a pretty good day. This morning I was able to meet with the necessary people to drop my graduate classes so I could officially defer my enrollment until next year should I decide to pursue my Master's in Community Health. When I got home from work Ashley, Mark, and Cathryn picked me up so we could start loading up their stuff and moving it to their apartment before they leave for the wedding/honeymoon. I didn't get home until almost 9 because after making several trips we decided to take a break at the old track. We laid in the grass and made cloud figures! An item on my 101 list that I can now cross off. I must say, I was pretty creative and everyone else found some good shapes too! It was a lot of fun. That was then followed by a game of ultimate frisbee before we decided to call it a day. I am e.x.h.a.u.s.t.e.d. I'm so glad I was able to help them out and hang out for a little while. It broke up the after work routine I have fallen into that is very quickly getting old. Below is a picture that Cathryn snapped while we were pointing out shapes.

When I got home, I decided it was probably a good idea to close my blinds since I have neighbors now (the Jets folks are in town.) They've seen me coming in and out so they too are aware that they have neighbors. Not that I don't trust the "peeping Toms" to mind their business, but I thought I would be better safe than sorry. SO, as I was closing my blinds this is what I saw...

After nearly tripping over a chair and nearly losing my breath, I got my camera so I could document how absolutely DISGUSTING spiders are and to share with you a little secret: I am deathly afraid of them! Of all things, a spider is by far the worst image I could have in my mind as I get ready to crawl into bed. I can only imagine how long it will take me to fall asleep because any air that moves across my legs or hair that tickles my arm will cause me to shoot up out of my bed and check the sheets. Ew. The very thought of any of it gives me the chills already.

Someone please come kill it for me.

Land a full-time job. check! Buy a car. check!

Hi! Remember me? I know it's been a while since I have updated my blog but some really exciting things have been happening!

To make a long story super short, I got a job! Yes, I already had a job working for Res. Life in the office and then as the Hall Manager next year in Whitaker Hall while I completed my masters but things changed...for the better! I was presented with the opportunity a few weeks ago to interview for 1 of the 2 full-time RHD positions that opened on campus while I was working in the office. Last week I was notified that I (along with my friend Ashley) was selected to fill the open RHD positions. Without hesitation, I accepted! And after letting out a huge sigh of relief when Ashley told me she got the other spot, we decided to celebrate. We decided to dine out...restaurant of choice: Red Robin..yummmmmmmmmm! Below is a picture of the balloon Ashley got while we were there! For those of you that don't know, Ashley is getting married next weekend and this job announcement could not have come at a better time. Now her and Mark can happily go on a honeymoon and come back to Cortland employed! Yay for them! I was very happy to hear she got the position to say the least. And of course, I was pretty excited for myself as well :-p

In a nutshell, accepting this position means that I will have more responsibilities, will not be taking graduate classes right now, I will have a salary, and I will gain some invaluable experience in the field so I can eventually make my next move up the Higher Ed./Student Affairs ladder. It also means that I will have time to think about what graduate program I want to pursue: Community Health or Higher Ed. Only time will tell...

The other really exciting thing that has happened over the past week or so is I bought a car!!!! This is a huge step into adulthood for me. My very own car! With that comes the payments and insurance and all of that jazz, but after hearing news of my new job I am more than ready to take on the challenge of sticking to this fabulous budget I have made for myself. Thanks dad for raising us to be money conscious nerds like you :-p I have created a budget that I hope will allow me to start putting some money away for later use when I need to buy other adult-like things...a house,...a lawn mower,...vacation homes,...etc. You know, the everyday necessities :-p I'm really excited to finally have responsibility for myself and to cut loose from my parents financially and give them a break...for awhile :-p I kid I kid. I'm really excited to start this new chapter in my life and buying a car was an excellent way to get things rolling! We'll see how I feel when that first maintenance bill comes, but for now my car is shiny and new!

I do have one story that is particularly important to share mainly because I have shared a few stories about Crumple in previous posts and I figure this is a good way to send Crumple onto wherever he's meant to go.

At the dealer last weekend our salesperson, Kim (who was very friendly and helpful I might add) was rather uneasy about sharing some news about Crumple with us. My dad, out of curiosity mostly, asked if she could find out how much we could get for Crumple if we traded him in. After she went and talked to the mysterious men in the back of the building, she wandered back to us and appeared slightly rattled. Her opening line was, "I don't like to offend people, but they said they would only give you $100 for your car." After my parents and I finished laughing a bit, I assured her she was not being offensive in any way...I call my car Crumple therefore it would be quite hard for her to offend me. We did not trade Crumple in, rather I dropped him off at my uncle's garage. We figure we can probably get a little more money than that especially with all the new parts we have recently purchased! I said goodbye to Crumple and will miss the deer hair that still sticks out of the fender and the noises that caused me to turn my radio up to drown out the sounds. Crumple was a good "hand-me-down" (Crumple had a previous owner) first car, but I'm glad I was able to upgrade. I feel a lot safer in ___________ (still have not determined a name for the new car.) Oh, what kind of car did I get?! 2010 Hyundai Elantra- black :-)

That's my mom taking off my license plate!

Can't wait to go exploring with my new car.

My advice to you job seekers out there: go buy a car! That's what I did and then the job soon followed. I don't think I pointed that out- I bought the car last weekend and got the job this past week...just need to do things backwards and it works out perfectly :-)

Peace out Crumple...

In New York...concrete jungle where dreams are made of

John is moving away. John has never been more than 30 mins. away from me for the past almost 10 years. We have been inseparable for that many years and all of that is about to change. We graduated high school together. Went to colleges right down the road from each other. We graduated from college and now John is moving to New York City to live out his dream. This.is.scary.

We got together tonight to catch up on life and see what the next step is for both of us (at Panera Bread, yumm-o!) We knew eventually this would happen- one of us would move away, but the reality of it is a lot more powerful than just the thought of it happening. New York City is less than 4 hours from Cortland, but for some reason it is a very scary thought. We have an incredible friendship and the thought of that changing is not what scares me. What scares me is how much our lives are changing and the fact that even 30 mins. away we had to set up special times to get together because we both live very crazy, hectic lives. What's it going to be like when we have to schedule to get together now? John joked, "I'll see you at Thanksgiving" but what if that's true? Sigh. Growing up is hard!

I left my girlfriends in May after graduating and we have managed to keep in touch without a problem. But something scares me about the fact that John has been here for almost 10 years...just down the road. He knows me better than almost anyone and boy do I like to vent to him when I've had a rough day. Thankfully our phones still work, so that's not an issue, but sometimes I just need to take a long walk with my friend and that is just not going to be an option anymore. Boo! After all we've been through, I know we'll stay John and Amber forever, but reality has stepped in to remind us that it has a plan too! No matter what, Johnny C will be my babycakes forever and I'm proud of the person he has become. I can't wait to see his name in bright lights.

To a new beginning... <3 id="gwProxy" type="hidden">

The next Tiger Woods.

I am happy to report that Friday night after a delicious dinner with my dad we decided to hit the golf course to play a few holes. For those of you that are not familiar with my family or my golfing history this a big deal. Everyone in my family plays golf except for me. When I was younger, I used to try reallllly hard, but it was never something that was of any interest to me or that I was very good at. In fact, when I used to go with my dad I was on a 10 hit rule where after 10 hits I had to pick my ball up so that the people behind us didn't get angry. THAT is how bad I was at golf. So, I hung up my clubs and decided to stick to contact sports- the sports that came natural for me :-p In my defense, I never really got back into golf because I broke my wrist twice and every time I attempted to swing a club it hurt pretty badly. And I am left handed, which nobody else in my family is, so I guess it was probably a little bit difficult to help me really get the hang of it since I was hitting from the other side. But truth be told, the times I did go golfing when I was younger I was really in it to drive the cart. I knew that if I agreed to golf that no matter what I would walk away a happy camper because we would get a cart and I would be the driver.

So anyway, on with the story. As I said, I am the only lefty in my family and apparently the only lefty at the Club Friday night because nobody had clubs for me to use. I used to have my own set...including a red putter! But my dad sold them...his way of really saying I'm not cut out for the game. On our way out, someone handed me one left handed club- a pitching wedge. I gladly accepted it not knowing exactly what I was supposed to do with it :-p We proceeded to get the golf cart (I in the driver's seat of course) and made our way to the first tee box. I had my sister's golf clubs with me and my dad wanted me to use them. To make a long story short and to cut to the point, we quickly realized that I am NOT a right handed golfer. Even though I've had some luck at the driving range a time or two using a right handed club, it is clear as day that I am much more comfortable golfing left handed. After a few holes we switched to the pitching wedge as my main club and then called it a night a few holes later. My wrist did alright, but if I make a habit of this I will probably have to wear my brace.

I can see myself getting out there to play the game a little more regularly, but first we need to get some clubs that I can use! It was fun...but I'm pretty competitive so at times I was pretty frustrated with my inability to hit the ball. It'll come with time, it has to right? If my whole family can do it then so can I!

Oh and PS, they say there's a dress code but I guess when you know all the right people wearing a backless tank top and flip flops is acceptable :-p

Pop.Lock.and Scrub it.

Brace yourself for this post. Do not read after eating. Do not read if you have a natural gag reflex (like me) when feet are even mentioned in conversation. This.is.graphic.

Okay, so 2 years of very little attention other than a few coats of paint can really getchya in trouble at the nail salon. And I quote, "you have a lot of skin!" In feet terms, apparently that's a really bad thing. It's been 2 years since my feet have set foot in a salon and tonight's visit has turned my attention to possibly making a habit of at least taking better care of them at home. From the outsider's perspective, they really aren't that bad. But in a professional's opinion, my feet are disgusting apparently...and something tells me I would not have liked what they were saying if I could understand them either.

Darci and I went to get pedicures before her and Josh take off for paradise tomorrow. I for one know that my feet suffer tremendously in the area of neglect and abuse. I'm farely active and enjoy wearing flip flops all.the.time. so if my feet could talk they would probably have a few choice words with me. Darci just got done running in the Boilermaker last weekend and with that plus the training comes some rather unusual blisters so much so, that at one point the lady attending to her needs said "gross" when she was handling Darci's pretty little piggies. But to her credit, at least she pays a little bit of attention to her feet at home because they weren't nearly as verbally abusive to her as they were to me!

Anyway, this experience was interesting and definitely worthy of a post of the next reason...we got yelled at for taking a phone out to capture a picture of this darling experience. Think about that one for a minute...no pictures allowed in the salon?....I'll leave you to create your own conclusion...

When all is said and done, I'm glad we went and my nails look great..for now. But I think we are going to try to save up so our next outing will be to a nice salon that allows pictures :-p

A picture of the final product. Ignore the bug bites- still recovering from my weekend in the mountains :-p

Until next time, scrub a dub dub!

101 List

This is 1/5 books I will complete for my 101 list requirement for reading. I really hope I can read more than five books in 1001 days, but sometimes it takes me a really long time to read a book because I would much rather look at a magazine or do something other than read :-p This one has been great so far..so if you have any ideas for books similar to this, let me know!

The second part of my 101 list post is a project link that I started tonight. Another item on my list is to make a scrapbook/picture book of each year I was in college and I decided to start with my senior year. Here is the result:

Is it a pizza or a calzone?

After a long day today, I decided it was a great idea to make the recipe of the week that I chose on Sunday: Fresh mozzarella and basil white pizza. Deciding to explore the art of pizza making was a terrible idea tonight. Not only was I starving as I prepared the ingredients, but I was exhausted from the day and quickly realized that a quick fix meal would have been a much better decision for dinner tonight. To say the least, when the kitchen timer went off and I pulled the sheet off the rack, I was amused by what I had created.

I wrestled with the pre-made pizza crust that I bought from the store for about 10 mins. Soon I realized that I made it more difficult than it needed to be because instead of paying attention to the dough when I pulled it out of the tube, I wadded it up in a ball thinking that's the way I saw it done at the pizza place. Little did I know, at the time, it was pre-cut and perforated for my convenience. Fail. So naturally I got frustrated after 10 mins. of wrestling with pizza dough that clearly won, and flattened it on the sheet to the best of my ability....needless to say, it did not cover the entire sheet, but I said eh it'll be fine once it cooks. Pah..hah.hahaha.

17 mins later after covering it in garlic, herbs, EVOO, fresh mozz and sticking it in the oven it was ready to be pulled out and covered with chopped, fresh basil. This is what I saw:

As you can see, it covers about 1/3 of the sheet- mostly just a blob in the middle. I greased the sheet so it wouldn't stick to that and it burned all around the edges of the 'pizza.' To top it off, it's about an inch thick- my original goal was thin crust pizza.

What did I learn from this experience?
1. Don't judge a book by it's cover...because it.was.delicious. despite it's shape, size, and overall appearance.
2. Don't experiment with cooking after a long day...because you end up easily amused and laughing at yourself.
3. Don't pretend to be Italian...because after you're done cooking you wonder, 'is it a pizza or a calzone?'

Who says you can't go home?

I was missing home quite a bit this weekend. Between the talks of my sister moving back in August(yes, for those of you that haven't heard, she is moving back and Fab will soon follow) and all of the car drama this past week, it has really made me want to be home with my mom and dad (my mom also had to put our two cats down last week, so I know that's been hard on her and she could use some company.)Being home seems far more appealing than being in the back lot of West Campus by myself with the woodchucks. Anyway, I have decided that the next chance I get to go home won't be until the last weekend in July when I have to go to Rochester for Ashley and Mark's wedding (ahh super excited about that!)...so I am looking forward to that already.

I spent this weekend cleaning the apartment, attempting to make a budget, and just relaxing...but a few things worth documenting did happen:

1. I got Crumple back. But unfortunately when I went to pick Calvin up at the airport Saturday night, the parking attendant told me I had a headlight out. FAIL!

2. I baked a lot- and by bake I mean made no-bake desserts :-) mmmm Strawberry Creme Squares and Chocolate Candy Bar Pie (I was supposed to bring the chocolate pie to a party I was going to, I didn't end up going so now I have no idea what I am going to do with it!!)

3. I made homemade chicken noodle soup (my mom's recipe) because I was homesick :-( I didn't feel good all day today and I was hoping soup would help!

4. I went for a little joyride (what I always do when I want to clear my head) and stumbled across Greek Peak! I've been here for 4 years and that's the first time I've ever been out there.

Those were my adventures for the weekend. Nothing too exciting. I am sad that I missed out on a BBQ/party today because I wasn't feeling well (sorry Darci!)

Let's hope this week proves to be a better, less stressful week than last week! Then I will be sure to have some funny stories to share!

How to say goodbye....

Picture #13

Tonight's post begins with a picture of my dinner. It satisfies not only the 'new recipe/week' item on my 101 list (the fresh veggie medley was sauteed in a way I have never done before!!) but also my craving for a big, juicy burger and beer. Unfortunately, I got a little thirsty before my dinner was ready, hence the 1/3 missing from the top of the glass :-p Anyway, I have had what some would say a rather frustrating and stressful week.

Why was my week stressful you ask? Well, my car has been giving me some problems lately. After getting hit at an intersection about 2 months ago, we have found that the back end of my car is not as it should be. This Tuesday I finally got to the point where I was too nervous and scared to drive my car so I took it to a local shop in Cortland. Come to find out, the back axle is bent, therefore that needs replaced along with two new tires. I have been without my car for 2 1/2 days now and lucky for me Darci and Josh have been amazing in letting me borrow one of their cars. When it comes to borrowing, I'm not very good at it- I don't like to put people out. But, fortunately for me, they have been very understanding and amazing in easing my worry about how I'm going to get back and forth to work. The mechanic said it should be ready in a few days...I hope that means by the end of the work day tomorrow it'll be finished.

The other part of this story is the fact that I am trying to find a way to purchase a new car. Crumple has been good to me, but it's about time we retire her to either a new owner or a junk yard. I am on the hunt for either a pretty new used car or a new car. Figuring out where to get it, what to get, and how to get it seems to be a bigger decision than I had imagined. Hopefully we will figure something out soon so I can stop worrying about my car and start getting ready for my job that starts in less than a month!

Just a little bump in the road...hopefully soon we will be figuring out how to say goodbye to Crumple and hello to a more dependable little gem I can call my own! :-p

Until then...

To my sister....

This post is dedicated to my sister. She missed her favorite holiday this year in the US, so I thought I'd capture some of it on video.

Love you Ali-baba!

Picture #11

My office! I've added a few personal touches here and there...some flower pens, tissues, and a postcard from Paris!
Also, notice the AC....I've never been a fan before but it sure has come in handy these past two days!
There's even a couch if I get too tired!!!!- it's nice and velvety. The right side/back of the desk is devoted to arts and crafts! Mostly because I got some glue stick residue all over and now it's super sticky!

We’ll put a boot in your ass, it’s the American way…

4th of July weekend is always an exciting time for me. With the combination of beautiful fireworks lighting up the sky to lawn games and frozen beverages, it proves to be one of my favorite times of the year! But I don’t love it nearly as much as my sister does…and this year she wasn’t here to celebrate our Independence. However, I understand she had quite the celebration with Fab and his family in France so I’m happy she was at least able to eat a burger and introduce them to a little bit of our traditions from home.

Anyway, each year my family goes to a friend’s house up on the lake in Cuba.It.is.one.heck.of.a.party. They get sparklers for all of the little kids (and my sister and I :-p) and have an endless supply of great food and beer. Can’t beat it…not to mention the amazing view over the lake and then at night the amazing fireworks. Ahhhh I smile just thinking about some of the memories I have from that party. When my mom called me a few weeks ago to tell me that her and my dad were going to go out of town this year (they went to Cleveland) I gasped at the thought of missing one of the biggest parties of the year! However, I then realized that I had made plans to travel north and spend the weekend with Janelle and Ang and my gasp quickly turned into a smile. I was prepared to miss out on what was sure to be the party of the year and spend the weekend with two of my favorite people. :-) The trade-off was worth it and I had a GREAT time this weekend.

I left Cortland Friday and returned early evening yesterday. I had every intention to get some things crossed off my list of 101 things this weekend and unfortunately only a few things came up. But I did experience my first jump (not dive,…jump) off a diving board, played my first round of horseshoes, and experienced Janelle’s excitement with going to the drive-in for the first time in her life! All of these things were accompanied by 80 degree weather and clear skies. It.was.amazing. I had one other goal in mind...get rid of my ridiculous tan lines- specifically the blinding white skin that hides under a tank top for 95% of the time – evening during the summer. Even though it is still pretty white, I am proud to say that I do have a tan line from the bottoms of my bikini and I can only hope that there will be many more weekends like this past one so I can attempt to have matching skin by the end of the summer!

My adventure this weekend was capped off with a quick trip to northern Syracuse to go fishing. My friend Doug has offered to be the one to take me on my first fishing adventure. Unfortunately we weren’t able to go yesterday because I don’t have a license and there was too much activity with it being a holiday weekend that it wasn’t worth getting caught! We all know how much of a rebel I am- imagine if my first ticket EVER was for fishing?! So, that item on the list will have to wait until another time when we can go out. We did play some lawn games and dominated in ladder golf though. When I got home from Doug’s, I went to Darci’s to catch up and have a candlelight dinner on the patio :-p (I say candlelight because the bugs were so bad her and Josh dug out their citronella candles to keep them away—do you think that counts as my ‘have dinner by candlelight' goal?! :-p)

What a great weekend…can’t wait to enjoy the beautiful, HOT weather we are supposed to have this week. Although it would be nice to have a pool out at West Campus to jump into if I get too hot!---perhaps I’ll pull some strings and get them to install one :-p

Stay Cool!

...and then there were FIREWORKS!

Pictures #10

The fireworks show we went to was
wonderful...as usual. I haven't missed a show my entire life...I'm glad I was able to spend this holiday with two of my favorite people :-)

PS we were literally 30 ft. away from where they were launching(if that's the word for it?) the fireworks and the debris was falling EVERYWHERE...so I opted to save my eyes by wearing my sunglasses. Janelle wanted to capture the moment...

there were 'fireworks...'

Picture #9

Please please pleaseeeee explain to me how this is appropriate at a public beach with little ones running around?...

Also, how it is NECESSARY to do that at a public beach....

PS I realize this is the second photo I have taken of strangers and their public display of affection (if you don't know what I'm referring to, check out my facebook)...that does not make me a creeper, that makes me a concerned citizen. What the crap is wrong with these people?!

Now Hiring: Professional Iron...er.

Fail. Fail. Fail.

However, I do not place the blame entirely on my mom...only like 12% because I can see why she would NEVER want to be in charge of teaching someone how to do such a tedious and annoying thing! I place 88% of the blame on the iron, the article of clothing, the stupid starch spray that is supposed to help but doesn't, and finally my ironing board that is broken so when you place an ounce of weight on it it falls to the floor....repeatedly throughout the process of ironing that already takes an entire day to do. As you can see, my attempt at ironing today was an EPIC FAIL.

Picture #6 represents one pair of pants that have not been worn yet..in fact I took the tags off to iron them....As you can see, they STILL have a hugeeeee wrinkle down the front pant leg because the iron and I did not see eye to eye. I don't know if this is a sick joke or what, but whoever is blessed enough to marry me had better know how to iron or support the services of a dry cleaner because this little lady is done experimenting.
